You Are Invited to the Software Freedom Day 2009 Philippines

by 謝施洗 (Shixi Xie) on Sep.16, 2009,under General

This year’s Software Freedom Day Philippines will be held at the University of Santo Tomas and it will be this Saturday, September 19th.

This is a yearly event not just in the Philippines but all over the world. The objective is simple, to educate and spread the development and use of FLOSS or the Free/Libre and Open-Source Software. It is not only cheap both in the short-term and the long-term, but it also promotes what we Filipinos loves so much - Freedom.

Freedom to what?

(note: Libre means freedom, not “free-of-charge” which is gratis.)

Follow up:

A Free/Libre Software have the following 4 freedoms:

  • Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program for any purpose.
  • Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works and change it to make it do what you wish.
  • Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
  • Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

* Freedoms 1 & 3 require the source code of the program.

In other words, if you are a developer, feel free to modify it for your own purposes or to improve it or release a whole new software based on that source code. Or if your friend is looking for a software that will do this and that, you have the freedom to give your friend a copy of the software you have (provided it is a FLOSS of-course).

It does not end there. SFD 2009 Philippines will be talking more about FLOSS deeper and beyond what I explained here.

They will be talking about the FLOSS Culture and the Community. Talk about Blender and GIMP, talk about CMS like Drupal, Joomla, and b2evolution (no, b2evolution is not included :p next year hopefully).

And of course, there will be an open forum. So if you are against FLOSS, come and join, and share your views why you are against it. Or maybe you have a lot of questions, then go ask it all! SFD Philippines is organized by no other than the Computer Professionals’ Union. You can register here.

Let us not forget the sponsors and partners, for without them this event will probably not materialize.
